We are proud to announce that club members Di and John Rogers have been awarded Maldon Citzens of the Year for their outstanding and valued contribution to the life of Maldon and their long support of Voluntary efforts. Mayor, John Driver, presented them with their award with the following commendation:
"This extraordinary couple have dedicated a lifetime to volunteering which has made a lasting impact on the Maldon community. One of the nominees has given decades of service to the Little Ship Club and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) for whom she has been fundraising since childhood. For over 12 years, she organised and cooked the much-loved monthly Soup Lunches, raising hundreds of pounds each month for local charities while bringing people together in a warm and welcoming environment.
Alongside her husband, she also helped run annual afternoon teas and community events that grew year after year. Even after her health declined, she continues to volunteer with determination and her ever-present smile.
The other half of the couple has equally devoted his life to service. A former biology teacher, he has supported the RNLI, played a key role in the Little Ship Club, organised events such as the annual Gig Race, trained new sailors, and contributed extensively to local heritage projects. He is also a writer, a mentor, and having taught himself guitar at 80 a regular entertainer for community groups.
Together, the couple have raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity, educated generations of local people, and inspired countless volunteers. Their energy, generosity, and ability to bring people together are truly remarkable.
They embody the very spirit of community, and it is no exaggeration to say that Maldon is a far better place because of them. I am delighted to present the Citizen of the year award to Diana and John Rogers for your determination and dedication which has made a lasting impact on our community."
John's acceptance words:
"At parents evening, if the kids weren't working very hard I would say to the parents, you only walk this way once in life so make the best of it and I hope we've done that."
