June Update

Published 21:33 on 10 Jun 2021

Hi All.

Wow! It certainly feels like summer now and I hope that you are able to enjoy the sunshine we have at the moment, either on or off the water.

Here's an update on what's going on at MLSC:

The Clubhouse is Open!

It's been so great to see so many of you back in the Clubhouse now that the bar is open again.

The bar is open on all of the usual days and times and operating table service and seating restrictions in accordance with current government regulations.

We very much hope that the expected relaxation to restrictions on 21st June is realised, and that the bar will be able to operate fully as 'normal'.

Thanks very much to Steve and the bar team for getting us up and running again, and to you for supporting the bar in a Covid-safe way.

Sailing

At last our sailing events are taking place again, and you can find details of the events on the website calendar, clubhouse notice board posters and email updates from Tim our Cruising Captain.

The latest update can be found under "Latest Sailing News" in the Sailing Section. Tim can be contacted at hon.cruising.mlsc@gmail.com for further information on any events.

Social

As you will have seen from Barry's email last week there is plenty coming up on the club social scene and some great new walking and cycling groups to get involved in. It would be great to see you at these events, so if you require any further information please get in touch with Barry at olliehouse@talk21.com or find the posters in the clubhouse and the website.

Training

As face-to-face instruction becomes possible again, the MLSC Training Team are compiling a programme of courses including; VHF Radio, First Aid and Day Skipper.

After this sailing season we would also like to run some informal non-RYA Sessions in the clubhouse such as; useful knots, use of a defibrillator and tidal awareness. If you have any suggestions for more subjects for informal training sessions we'd love to hear them.

For any information on training contact Jo at hon.training.mlsc@gmail.com

MLSC Shop

I'm very pleased to announce that our new shop has gone live on our website.

By clicking on the 'Shop' tab on the main menu you will be taken to our MLSC Shop page which shows the club regalia items & burgees that can be obtained by contacting Jenny at hon.merchandising.mlsc@gmail.com. From this page you can click on the 'Clothing Shop' link which will take you to a great selection of clothing that can be ordered with the club logo, boat name and sail number. Orders placed here will be fulfilled directly by Native Promotions of West Mersea.

My thanks to Jenny and webmaster Peter Draper for making this possible.

Sailing Barge Blue Mermaid - Blackwater Barge Match 2021

My thanks to Iain Stubbs for the below:

Since 2019, members of MLSC have raced as part of the crew of SB Blue Mermaid in the annual Blackwater Barge Match.

This fantastic and new tradition is possible again to all members on July 17th this year.

Join the barge at Heybridge Basin on Friday 16th (exact time to be confirmed but expected to be around 1530hrs)

Sail to the idylic Osea Island, dine and overnight ready for the challenge of the Barge Match in the morning (around 0800hrs)

The course is to be decided, but normally starts and ends off Osea Pier, racing to the Bench Head, inner bench head.

We return to Maldon Hythe on the early evening flood (HW 1845hrs)

Friday evening meal, Saturday breakfast & lunch (on the go race food) included in price.

There are six crew places available, at £125 per person, single berths (pipe cot style)

More details to follow once you have contacted Richard Titchener and parted with a 50% deposit, email to book: richard@seachangesailingtrust.org.uk

Make sure you book now - only six places available! Last time Blue Mermaid came 2nd in the Bowsprit class, let's go for the win this time with you on board!

You are welcome to stay aboard Saturday too. We are likely to leave on Sunday morning. We ask people joining to have had a Covid test shortly before joining on the 17th and be clear of any symptoms.

All the best
