February Update

Published 19:09 on 14 Feb 2021

Hi All

It's been a long, dark, cold month since my last update, but it must mean that we're a month closer to the end of this lockdown and a month closer to the longer warmer days of Spring. Despite the freezing temperatures of late, you can see the days perceptively drawing out and I know that many of you had have a vaccine jab, so hopefully better times are just around the corner.

At least we're able to get a sailing fix of sorts at the moment by watching Ben Ainsley and Ineos Team UK battling with the Italian team in the final races of the Prada Cup. This is to see who will go on to tackle the Kiwis for the America's Cup. It seems to be very lightly covered by UK mainstream media, but can be easily found online, and the races are available in full on YouTube. If you can work out whether the foiling boats are going upwind or downwind then you've pretty much got it sussed.

I have a few things to share with you this month:

Training

We have a Day Skipper course on Zoom starting on the 10th March. There are still places available so if you, or someone you know, are interested in joining the course please contact our training administrator Jo Smith at hon.training.mlsc@gmail.com

Spring Newsletter

The copy date for the Spring Newsletter is 28th February and our Newsletter Editor Barry Fix would love to have your contribution to include. It doesn't have to be sailing related - anything you think might be of interest to fellow members. If you'd like to tell us about your boat, where you've sailed in the past or plans for the future, we'd love to hear about that too. Take a look at previous newsletters on our website for inspiration.

2021 Sailing Programme

As mentioned previously, our draft 2021 Sailing Programme is on our website under the 'Sailing' Tab and in the Calendar dates. Your comments on the programme are welcome before it is finalised in the next few weeks. Of course, the Covid situation is likely to impact our programme, and our plans may have to change. For this reason, and to save on printing costs, we will not be printing and posting the traditional hard copy programme to all members this year. You will be able to download and print the finalised programme from the website and there will be some printed copies in the clubhouse for you to take if needed. These will be updated if our plans are changed.

Heritage Sub-committee

The Maritime History Week in May/June will now take place online due to the difficulties associated with Covid-19. MLSC has previously been very involved in heritage events in Maldon and will be contributing this year to the on-line event. The Maldon Heritage Working Group are also involved in producing a Calendar and 365 day on-line book which MLSC will be featuring in. To support these endeavours we will be re-establishing our MLSC Heritage Sub-committee and if you would like to be involved in any of this please get in touch with Andrea at 'hon.secretary.mlsc@gmail.com'

AGM

Our Annual General Meeting is due in March and with the pandemic situation unlikely to change significantly by then it will be necessary to hold this via email.

You'll recall that we completed last year's AGM successfully using email, and post for those members 'offline', and so I'm confident that we can do the same again this year. Please look out for the AGM email next month, as it can only be completed with your responses.

If you would like a particular item included in the AGM AOB please send this to Andrea at hon.secretary.mlsc@gmail.com by 21st Feb.

General Meeting

For a few months now in Committee we have been considering the possible refurbishment of our galley. I expect those of you familiar with the galley will agree that refurbishment and replacement of the old appliances is a bit overdue, and this would actually be quite a big project.

Expenditure on projects such as this, which go beyond regular clubhouse maintenance, is required by our Standing Orders to be approved by the membership at a General Meeting.

As we're not able to convene a General Meeting at the clubhouse, we propose to hold this General Meeting via email, and will be asking for your approval of a budget for this proposed project. Please look out for this email in the next week or so.

I'm looking forward to the time we can open the clubhouse and be together again, but in the meantime do remember to reach out to the Committee and your fellow members if you need our help with anything. We are here for you.

All the best.

Kev Knox
